Algebra: Equation

Introduction to Algebraic Equation

Activity 1:
Watch the movie, X finds out his value, and answer the following questions.

Given the following:
2x + 4 + x = 8 + 2(3 + x) -3
  1. Is this an expression or an equation? Why?
  2. What is the variable?
  3. Why is an equation like a see-saw?
  4. Simplify 2x + 4 + x Answer: ___________________
  5. Simplify 8 + 2(3 + x) -3 Answer: ___________________
  6. Solve the above for x Answer: x = ________________
Activity 2:

The objective of the activity is to use concrete representation to find the unknown variable. Algebraic reasoning is used to solve or find the numerical value of the variable.

  • Levels 1 and 2 contain two scales.
  • Level 3 is more difficult and has three scales.
  • Your goal is to determine the weight of one or more of the objects.

  1. Activity 1:
1.It is an equation. The value of both the sides of the 'see-saw' are equal.
    2.The variable is x.
3.Imagine the equal is the fulcrum while the number on both side must be equal in order to balance the 'see-saw'.
    4.The answer is (3x+4).
    5.The answer is (2x+14).
    6.The answer is 7.

  3. Activity 1:
    1) It is an equation as it describes that one side of it is equivalent to the other.
    2) x is the variable
    3) When the see-saw is balanced, it means that both sides have "equal mass" or in this case, equal value. So the fulcrum of the see-saw will be the equal sign in an equation, and will "balance" when both sides have equal value.
    4) Ans: (3x + 4)
    5) Ans: (2x + 11)
    6) x = 7

  4. 1) Equation. There value of the left side of the equal sign is the same value as to the value on the right side of the equal sign.
    2) The variable is x
    3) Both sides of the equation (separated by the equal sign) is of the same value. To balance a see-saw you need both sides of a see saw to be of the same weight.
    4) Ans: (3x + 4)
    5) Ans: (2x + 11)
    6) Ans: x = 7

  5. 1.)Equation. There is a equals sign which means the two 'sides' are equal.
    2.)The variable is x.
3.)If the sentence is equal, the see-saw will balance.
    4.)3x+4
    5.)2x+11
    6.)x=7

  6. 1) This is an equation. An equation means that both numerical statement are equal or have the same value.
    2) The variable is x.
    3) For the see-saw to balance, both sides should be equal. Thus the mathematical statement on each side of the equation are equal.
    4) 3x + 4
    5) 2x + 11
    6) x = 7

  7. 1. It is an equation. An equation means that two expressions in the statement are equal. An expression only means a collection of symbols and terms. The equal sign shows that both sides are equal.
    2. The variable is 'x'
    3. A see-saw requires both sides to be equal or else if one is too heavy it will not be balanced and thus not equal. In Math, it is the same. Both sides of the 'equal' sign have to have the same value.
    4. Ans: (3x + 4)
    5. Ans: (11+2x)
    6. Ans: x = 7

  8. Activity 1 :
    1. It is an equation because the two expressions in the statement are equal.
    2. The variable is "x" .
    3. A see-saw needs both side to be equal in order to balance. If one side is too heavy or too light, it will not be balanced and equal. So, in math, it means the same, it it is to have both side to be the same.
    4. (3x+4)
    5. (11+2x)
    6. x=7

  9. 1. It is an equation because value on the left side of the 'see-saw' is equivalent to the value on the right side of the 'see-saw'.

    2. The variable is "x".

    3. In order for the see-saw to be balanced, the weight of the both sides of the see-saw should be equal. Also, to have an equation (that is balanced), both expressions on both sides should be the same, just like the see-saw.

    4. (3x + 4)

    5. (2x + 11)

    6. x = 7

  10. 1. It is an equation. The value of both sides are the same, thus it is an equation.
    2. It is x
    3. It is because the equations behave just like a see-saw. Example, if x is 7 and you put a 8 there, the equation will be unbalance, just like the see saw.
    4. It is 3x+4
    5. It is 2x+11
    6. It is 7

  11. 1) It is an equation as both sides after the equal sign is equivalent to each other.
    2) x is the only variable.
    3) The equal sign acts like a fulcrum or stand of the see-saw. The two sides have to be of equal weight to be balanced. Whereas in this equation, the two number sentences have to be equal in order for the equal sign to be in between.
    4) Answer: 3x+4
    5) Answer: 2x+11
    6) x is equivalent to 7

  12. 1) It is an equation as both sums on both sides of the equal sign has the same value.
    2) It is 'x'.
3)To make a see-saw balanced, both sides of the see-saw must have the same weight, the same applies to the equation. Both sides must have the same value to make the equation, 'see-saw', balanced.
    4) 3x+4.
    5) 2x+11.
    6) 'x' is 7.

  13. Activity 1:
1:It is an equation because the sides opposite of the equal sign are balanced out.
    2: The variable is x.
3: Like a seesaw, an equation must balance out on both sides for the equation proves to equality of both sides of the equation.
    4: (3x+4)
    5: (11+2x)
    6: X=7

  14. 1,It is an equation as the numbers on both sides are equal when added up.
    2.x
3.It is like a see-saw as both can only be balanced when both sides are equal.
    4.(3x+4)
    5.(2x+11)
    6.x = 7

  15. 1.Is an equation as both sides are equal after calculating the answer.
    What is the variable?
    2.The variable is x.
3.The answer can be correct when both sides of the equation are the same give the same value, like a balanced see-saw.
    4. 3x+4
    5.: 2x+11

    1. It is an equation. The results at both sides of the equation are equal.
    2. The variable is x.
    3. When one side of the see saw 'sinks', it means that the side has a higher result than the other side. If they are equal, the see saw will be balanced.
    4. 3x+4
    5. 2x+11
    6. x=7

  18. Activity 1 :

    1. This is an equation as the two expressions are actually equivalent to each other when the answer is obtained, since x is balanced on the 'see-saw' when beside 7 . ( From the video)

    2. The variable is x. (which is also the only variable found in both expressions)

    3. It is like a see-saw as the expressions or numbers on both sides when summed up or simplified actually results in the same answers. so both are equal, or rather balanced, just like a see-saw.

    4. Simplify 2x + 4 + x
    Answer: 3x + 4

    5. Simplify 8 + 2(3 + x) -3
    Answer: 11 + 2(x)
